A tragic investigation in Halifax has become increasingly dire after a 23-year-old mother of a deceased newborn baby succumbed to her injuries in hospital. According to authorities, the woman was taken to hospital in critical condition last Friday following a 911 call that brought emergency responders to an apartment building on Willett Street in Halifax's Clayton Park neighbourhood. At the time, authorities noted that the woman appeared to have recently given birth, but the baby was missing.
A prompt search effort was launched, with Halifax police and Nova Scotia Ground Search and Rescue participating. The initial search centered on the apartment building's surrounding area, but information gathered during interviews directed investigators to an alternative location. The remains of the newborn were found in a wooded area off Old Coach Road on Sunday afternoon, roughly 10 kilometers from the original search site. Authorities have announced that the mother has also died, with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service tasked with determining her cause and manner of death, while the infant's death remains under investigation.
The investigation into the incident is complex according to authorities. Two individuals remain in custody in connection with the discovery of the baby's remains. Sukhpreet Singh, 23, and Ramandeep Kaur, 26, are each charged with concealing the body of a child, indignity to human remains, and two counts of obstruction. Authorities have previously stated that Singh is a relative of the baby's mother. Their bail hearing was postponed on Thursday, and both are expected to appear in court again on June 22.
The Crown has suggested that more charges could be forthcoming. Earlier this week, Crown prosecutor Paul Carver notified the court that there was “potential for additional very serious charges under these circumstances.”
This continues to be a deeply sensitive and intricate matter, with two fatalities currently under investigation and numerous unanswered questions still to come.
